Geolocation games just took a big step forward — yes, that was an amazing pun, thank you — with the latest update from Mythwalker. The mobile RPG added a new “tethering” system with the latest update, which studio NantGames argues is as a first for the genre.

“Tethering is a new groundbreaking feature that allows players global synchronous gameplay for up to three players,” the studio explained. “Up to two players can join a lead friend to explore the leader’s local landscape together. For example, a player in New York and another in Tokyo can tether to a lead friend in London, and together they can explore the streets of London as a party. Together they can complete story quests, battle enemies and gather resources. The more players in a party the better rewards.” It kind of sounds like couch co-op to us, and we’ve got a few online MMOARGs that seem to do similar things, but hey, the more the merrier.

Players will need that extra companionship, too, because Mythwalker added 20 more quests (including a trip to Stonehenge) and a bunch of tough new… fairies? They’re technically called “Wydevae” and can totally kick your butt, so be careful.
