As promised, Crystal of Atlan – which kinda came out of nowhere back in March – has officially launched today on PC, PS5, and mobile. It’s an anime action MMO that was originally being published by ByteDance’s NuVerse subsidiary, but a few weeks ago Nuverse announced a switchover to David Brevik’s publishing unit, Skystone, just like Marvel Snap before it, presumably to avoid entanglement with the ongoing political chaos in the U.S.

The assumption among MMORPG players is that the game must be a gacha game because it looks like a lot of the gacha games coming out of East Asia lately, but Nuverse has told us repeatedly that it is not. “While our game features anime-style characters, it is fundamentally different from Genshin Impact. We do not have gacha mechanics for character or weapon pulls,” the studio says. Today’s press release reiterates that there are “11 Classes with No Character Gacha” and that you can “[e]njoy all classes for free.” Monetization looks like a lot of other F2P titles with a hefty cash shop instead.

“Set in a vibrant Magicpunk world, players will embark on an epic journey through a fantastical realm where magic and technology intertwine. As free-spirited adventurers, they will uncover the secrets of ancient Atlan ruins and confront powerful factions to restore peace to Atlan and unveil the truth hidden within its fractured history. As a multiplayer-focused MMO Action RPG, Crystal of Atlan puts a strong emphasis on cooperative multiplayer gameplay and social interaction. At its core, the game delivers thrilling, fast-paced combat within engaging co-op dungeons, inviting players to forge alliances and tackle challenges together.”

The devs have gone all-out to promote the launch with registration gifts, login gifts, and collabs with esports outfit Team Liquid and “dozens of popular streamers and creators” that promise a $20,000 prize pool.
