Elder Scrolls Online deep-dives the subclassing system arriving with next week’s Update 46

We don’t know where spring went, but it’s almost over, and that means The Elder Scrolls Online’s long-awaited Seasons of the Worm Cult is just around the corner. But if you’re not planning to pay the annual content pass fee for half a year of content, then you might be more intrigued by what’s coming in the free basegame patch – and yes, it includes the subclassing system that ZeniMax Online Studios has been teasing.

As the studio has previously explained, subclassing is meant to allow players to branch out and use skill lines from other classes to create a unique build, all in the service of the studio’s philosophy that players should control customization. The plan is that you get a toon to 50, then you can take one line from your base character and add two more from other classes.

“As there are now 21 total skill lines you can unlock and play on your account, it will be a long-term project to max all of them out,” says ESO’s Carrie Day. The devs are also conscious about the potential for overpowered builds:

“We know the Subclassing system will infuse power into the player community. For example, players can drop their tank and support skill lines for more damage-dealing abilities and passives. […] However, there is a trade-off—by taking all damage skill lines, you are more reliant on your team for support healing, shielding, and protection. Also, there is no desire to reduce the effectiveness of pure classes and their ability to complete content, and overall, the system should make the content more accessible to all players.”

Seasons of the Worm Cult and U46 launch June 2nd on PC/Mac, while console players wait until June 18th.
