The frustrating hits just keep on coming for Storrmhaven Studios’ Embers Adrift. Readers no doubt recall that the devs behind the MMORPG were effectively screwed over by their payment processor, which withheld player subscription money since June 2024, and then earlier this month the studio started handing out free subscription time because payment processing via Steam was also not functioning for some players.
Well, it looks as if the whole rigmarole has forced Stormhaven to switch things up, as the game will soon be shuffling away from a monthly subscription monetization and will instead “offer blocks of perk time for purchase.” The system isn’t live yet owing to the need for some development work, which means that we don’t know the costs for these blocks or how many blocks are sold, but when it is, un-refunded subscription payments will be converted into equivalent game time. In the meantime, free sub benefits will roll on.
The announcement of this monetization change rides along patch notes for Embers’ latest patch, which upgrades the game’s engine to Unity 6, makes some general gameplay adjustments, adds clearer visual cues for when an enemy is winding up a larger attack, and applies several bug fixes.
