Back in the day, I used to label frequently used biomes in video games “Super Mario Sonic” levels. As in, oh, it’s another volcano zone. Oh, it’s another pleasant grassy area. Oh, it’s another water zone with some electrified fish or eels or something. Just pick out some stock theme and employ it with the bare minimum of imagination.

Fortunately, we’ve seen much wider diversity of biome types in MMOs, including some fantastic ones that don’t exist anywhere on planet earth. But that doesn’t mean that we also haven’t seen some zone types done to death.

So what do you consider the most overused MMO zone type or biome? Is it the fantasy forest? The pastoral hills? The angry swamp? The dead woods? Or something else entirely?
