For nearly two weeks now, the online game platform BYOND has been under severe DDoS attacks to the point that it and its supported titles aren’t accessible. According to a now-deleted post on Reddit, the malicious actors here are trying to pressure the site’s owners into going open source. So far, the owners are holding out against such a ransom demand.
The DDoS attack began on May 10th, and the dev team has been working with its provider to resolve the crisis. However, there still is no ETA for restoration as of May 22nd. In the meanwhile, the BYOND team posted some workarounds to help players connect to their games.
“Attacks on BYOND servers are a symptom of your obstinance,” the hackers wrote. “They will persist as long as you ignore the voices of those who keep your platform afloat. But we seek no war. We demand you voluntarily side with progress.”
In response, a dev wrote, “The most positive outcome is if the community rallies support on Patreon and SubscribeStar while the site is down and new memberships can’t be purchased. It’ll help repudiate this nonsense, as I’m sure they’re spending a lot of money on this attack.”
BYOND is best-known for hosting Space Station 13, a popular multiplayer sim in the vein of RimWorld and Dwarf Fortress. Space Station 14 is currently in development and can be viewed on Steam.
