Last November, we asked our readers in a Daily Grind whether roleplaying-enforced servers should make a comeback. The answers were mostly in the affirmative, though some also pointed out that roleplay servers being encouraged or unofficial was simply a concession to modern gaming times. Well, if you feel like having more roleplay in your MMORPG, then perhaps Illarion should be on your radar.
Illarion fully calls itself a game where roleplay is enforced and design is primarily focused on interaction with other players. The game takes place in what is called a mature high fantasy open world with a classless progression system that lets players cobble together their own adventurer, crafter, or other such personality, and its rules and guidelines about its setting make no bones about the firm RP focus.
Illarion is fully free to download and play and is also open source, and has continued to receive content updates such as one just this month that added new runes, new attributes for craft and gathering skills, and a host of general updates and bug fixes. Assuming the old school isometric visuals aren’t a deterrent for you and you’d like to be assured there is RP happening in your MMORPG, maybe give this one a look.
